Audiences who want to watch TV shows or movie superhero adaptations and aren’t familiar with the comic book source material usually have two options. They can go into the content without any knowledge of its main character(s) or they can actually go back and become familiar with the subjects of the new media. One of the best ways to do this is to read the original comic books. Unfortunately, many superheroes have extremely long comic book backlogs and those who want to go into a story with some knowledge may not actually have the time to read all of them, let alone find them all. Thus, they must resort to knowing only a fair amount about the character through their wiki profile. For those of you with even less time, here is an ever shorter breakdown of the character Stargirl that’s great for reading before watching the TV show adaption of the character’s story.
Origin
Stargirl, aka Courtney Whitmore, was created by comic book veteran Geoff Johns and, if what he said is true, has a personality based on Johns’ late sister. At the start of her story, Courtney is just an average California teenager who is forced to, much to her dismay, move to Nebraska after her mother and father break up and her mother marries a new man. She later discovers, after searching through her new stepfather’s possessions, the old equipment of the late Star-Spangled Kid. It turns out that he, Pat Dugan, was actually Stripes, the adult sidekick to the Star-Spangled Kid. Courtney uses this fact to mock her stepdad at first, even donning Star-Spangled Kid’s superpower-giving cosmic converter belt, but then the two of them team up to fight crime.
Basic Powers And Abilities
While Courtney doesn’t have any natural powers of her own, the Cosmic Converter Belt, which formerly belonged to Sylvester Pemberton, aka the Star-Spangled Kid, grants her enhanced athletic abilities such as durability, stamina, strength, and speed. This belt also gives her the ability to create force fields. She also later gains the Cosmic Rod from a later adapter of the Star-Spangled Kid mantle, Starman, and is able to use it to fly and project different forms of energy. Beyond that, she has trained extensively in various forms of combat with the different superhero teams of which she has been a part.

Most of Stargirl’s stories revolve around her affiliations with different superhero teams, such as the Justice Society of America and JSA All-Stars. For example, one major plotline is her having a romantic relationship with Captain Marvel/Shazam and causes the hero to abandon his team after his relationship with the teenaged superhero is deemed controversial (despite Shazam’s secret identity being a teenager). In addition, Stargirl deals with the legacy of Starman, meeting with the late superhero’s sister, Merry, and gaining her blessing as her brother’s successor as well as confronting Solomon Grundy, who ended up murdering Starman. Hopefully, this information has helped you better understand Stargirl and you’ll be able to understand the Stargirl tv show from a more knowledgeable perspective.
